Wound Care Tips After a Stitch Removal

Wound Care Tips After a Stitch Removal

One of the most common procedures of closing a wound is stitching. From lacerations, accidental cuts, or operations, stitches are used to allow the skin to heal naturally.

Depending on the location and size of your wound, stitches can be removed within 14 days by your family doctor in Guelph. Taking care of your incision is important to ensure it won’t reopen or get infected.

Here are tips from your local walk-in clinic in Guelph on how to care for your wound after suture removal:

  • Preparing your materials
Before going to your doctor to get your stitches removed, make sure to visit a pharmacy in Guelph to ensure you have the products needed for basic wound cleaning, such as medical gloves, alcohol pads, gauze sponges, and dressings.
  • Cleaning
You need to keep the wound clean and dry. Use water and soap to clean the area and a cloth to dry. If the area is prone to contamination or re-injury, cover it with a band-aid.
  • Care for a scar
Applying vitamin E cream or aloe vera can reduce scarring. You also need to use a sunblock with at least SPF 30 to protect the scar from direct sun exposure.
  • Watch out for possible infection
Even though your sutures have been removed, your wound is still healing and may get infected. If you notice any signs of infection, such as redness, pain, and swelling, call your doctor immediately.
